Beating the Odds: Colten Ellis
Jan 13, 2025
In the high-stakes world of professional hockey, success is often measured in goals scored, assists made, or saves recorded. But for some players, the true test lies in their ability to face personal challenges and adversity, both on and off the ice. One such player is Colten Ellis, a promising goaltender for the St. Louis Blues, whose path to the NHL has been shaped by perseverance and an unwavering determination to overcome the obstacles his professional career has thrown his way. Dr. McFadden and Colten worked together during the 2021-2022 season, with a large area of focus being on maintaining a positive and winning mentality. Colten spent the 2022-2023 season in the ECHL, before earning a regular spot with the Blues AHL affiliate Springfield during the 2023-2024 season. Fast forward to the 2024-2025 season where Ellis has solidified his spot as Springfield's starting goalie with a 10-5-2 record, 2.68 GAA and .920 save percentage.
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Colten Ellis’s journey is the mental toughness and mentality that he developed along the way. Hockey, like all professional sports, is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Goaltenders, in particular, are often faced with the daunting task of staying calm under pressure, making split-second decisions, and bouncing back from mistakes with a clear mind. What set Ellis apart was his refusal to be defined by setbacks. Each obstacle that he overcame ultimately improved his mindset and made him a mentally tougher and more resilient athlete. His ability to work through these setbacks allowed him to maintain his focus and work toward his ultimate goal.
Colten Ellis’s story is an excellent example of the importance of perseverance, resilience, and maintaining a positive mentality in the face of adversity. He has faced his fair share of challenges, both physical and mental, but instead of letting them defeat him, he has used them as fuel to improve in all aspects of his game. For young players dreaming of making it to the NHL or any other professional sports league, Ellis serves as a role model. His journey shows that talent alone isn’t enough—success requires a belief in yourself, the strength to fight through setbacks, and the mentality to keep going when the odds are stacked against you.
